So who's going to be the first to throw a turbo on a 3900 in their Monte? That's what the 7th gen question should be

that would be sweet, but I'm still under a warranty and I doubt it will cover a turbo set-up

What about 85 octane (ethanol).
E85 is not 85 octane:

Ethanol’s true octane value should be used to calculate E85’s octane value. This results in an octane range of 94-96 (R+M)/2.
It has higher octane than premium, which is why many turbo people run it in the warmer months as a cheap race gas.

Also, you can not run this in your car without modifications- the only factory vehicles that can run it are those labeled for "flex fuel".

I noticed online it says to run Premium 91 octane. I live in Canada so hoping I don't have too because high test gas here is really expensive.
Probably should've mentioned it before, but if you're worried about paying extra for premium gas- maybe buying a moderate-at-best (as far as fuel economy goes) V8 isn't the best option. You could save a lot more money in the long run getting a V6 if you drive that much- and you could run 87 also.

The dealership filled the tank for me with Regular 87 and it seems to be driving ok but maybe thats because I haven't tried the 91.
The car won't run any 'worse' on 87- the car is labeled as 'premium recommended' which means if you put 87 octane in, the computer will cut timing to fight the knock. So it will run and drive just fine on 87, but premium will make more power. As said above, no sense in buying the highest power engine and not paying the extra few cents a gallon to get all the performance out of it.

great looking monte! i wish i would have sprung for the SS.

i would shop around and see if you can find some 91 octane or higher for a reasonable price if possible. at least here in MN, the 91 at some stations are 20 or 25 cents higher than 87, but if you look around, you can find it for 10-12 cents above 87. i always have to run 91 in my snowmobile so i'm always on the lookout for a good deal.

you mentioned e85 (85% ethanol and 15% gas) in your first post. do NOT run this in your LS4 as it is not tuned for it. you will run very lean and blow up your engine. however, it would be great to be able to take advantage of the 105 octane.

we only have 87,89,93, and one gas station with 94.
i have to drive about 20 miles to find e85 so ive never tried it. i heard its cheaper, but you get worse mileage.

Gorgeous! Those rims will look great, but keep the stockers for winter.

For some reason, not thinking, I have been using 87 since I got my SS a few weeks ago. I will be switching to the premium tomorrow. But I was thinking, say the premium is 93, which is what we have, what if I were to put an octane booster in it, what would happen? Not that I have, lol, just wondering, would it not be a good idea? Some of the octane boosters I have read will jump it up 6 full octane, so it would end up being around 100 with premium gas. I am assuming that would be too much?

91 is premium in some parts of the country- your premium is 93/94. We used to have 93/94 premium back when I lived in IN, now that I'm in AZ- 91 is the premium. The other octanes are the same (although I did see on station in NM on the way out here with 5 octane levels, the lowest being 85- wtf).

Not worth it IMO. You won't gain any power not being boosted- and gas mileage is a good deal worse (usually enough to almost negate the money savings, especially if you have to drive a 40 mile round trip to get it). Supposed to be better for the environment by being mostly made of renewable resources.

No regular parts store octane booster will give you 100 octane, period. Only way to get 100 unleaded is $6 / gallon race gas. Those little octane booster bottles have less effectiveness on higher octane fuel- and even then, the bottle is too small to have a major effect on 16 gallons of gas.

so then, octane boost is junk? what about fuel injector cleaners that are also in those little bottles? are they any good for cleaning fuel injectors??, thanks

with e85 you would need a tune to notice the hoter temps and different injectors as in bigger to run regular gas and e85. you know how the 3500 flex fuel monte's and impallas are it is tuned for vvt and the sensors are a little different than the regular motors. the v8 that is in the monte should be set up to run both high grade and e85. but i may be wrong some might be set up but not all. i know the police impallas that are flex fuel have the v8 and the v6 but prodomitally the v8 to try to be an interseptor the ones that are v6 flex are just run of the mill here you have been served crusers.
