Default 72 MC 350/350 3650M

Hi all,
A newbie here with a few questions.

I've got a line on a 72 Monte Carlo 350 350hp with 3650 miles. Yes,three thousand six hundred and fifty miles. It has the original air in the tires. The frame and the whole underside of the car looks original, untouched, and rust free. I test drove it today and noticed that it will need some weatherstripping pieces and the dash pad is warpped. It looks fairly new otherwise.

Whats the availability of all the nit-picky parts like weatherstripping, small interior parts that may break, stuff like that on a 72?

Also, when going down the highway, it seemed like it required a lot of input in the steering wheel to keep the car straight. The wheel was turned a little to the left (probably needs alignment) and the front end seems to float a bit (maybe degraded shock seals?) andyou have to turn the wheel a lot to make asmall correction (variable rate steering?). I normally drive a C4 Vette and this is certainly a different car.

It has an automatic...a nice one. Itwill chirp thewheels whenit shifts into 2nd. Are people putting 4 or 5 speeds in these (not that I would do that with this car)?

The seller wants 14 grand. Do you think it's worth it?

As a member of the Corvette forum, this is the best place in the whole world for answers.

Thanks for your time,
The Beep

Thanks Spacerider, those links are very helpful. It sounds like the price may be in line for that car.

Weatherstripping would probably be easiest to just buy lengths long enough for what you need and then custom cutting them down to fit. I know we have some for dad's '71 Camaro, but we are just going to wait until it gets bodywork/painting and give that guy the stripping so he can install it when he has the car stripped down.

Most small parts you might be able to find on eBay, and if not there are catalogs out there for classics with all sorts of restoration parts and I'm sure there are some for those gen Montes.

Hello, The Beep, and welcome. Parts availability is much better for 1st Gen Monte's than 2nd Gen Monte's, like my 76. You'll be able to find a lot from The Paddock and Original Parts Group.

Thanks all,
I see that Year One has a bunch of stuff for the Monte Carlo in it's Chevelle section.
Any opinions on the steering/handleing? I'ld be replacing the shocks for sure and maybe installing stiffer front springs.

when i did mine i did all polly bushings and completly rebuilt the front end.
you would be supprised on how well it can help the front end out of a old car.
Also i did the drop spindels on it. lowerd the front about a 1o2"
and worked great for giving it a nice rake but also helped to make it not to drastic.

the big thing to think of is how far in to this do you want to get?
If it is in really good shape i would still pull the intereior out of it and clean everythign thing up.
I would also do the same for the rear end etc... this thing has been sitting for awhile so i would make sure that i went threw stuff to make sure it was in good shape and would last another 40 or more years.

remeber a cheap digital camera is your best frend!! also i had a old VHS video camera and a old VCR out in my grage to tape when i was pulling things apart and putting them togeather this helps out alot when doing things your not real sure of. it will give you a good reffence for later also.

I have a PST polygraphite super front end kit on my Monte with Ground Zero coil springs in the front of my 76. Seems to be good suspension components. I plan on upgrading to KYB gas shocks in the front and back and getting a G-Max rear sway bar from PST.
