Default 3rd Brake Light

I have been looking for a 3rd brake light to replace my burnt out one . I found some but there pretty pricey. Isn't there a way to just replace the burnt out bulb or even install LEDs ? Herman

Those 3rd brake lights come from the '00-07 Monte or '00-'05 Impala. They should be super common and cheap these days (I've picked one up from the salvage yard for less then $10 for a project).

If you are handy with a soldering iron, you can service it yourself. If one LED is out, it's most likely the LED died. But if a group of LEDs is dead, could be a little more involved. I believe GM divided the circuit into 2-4 groups. There could be a resistor that has failed.

So is there some way to check to see if the wrecking yard one is good (maybe a 9volt battery) ? Herman

Not many Monte Carlos around here think Ive seen maybe 3 since I bought mine. I found one in the wrecking yard a 2003 and it wasn't long before it was attacked for parts. I wasn't aware that the Impala light was the same that was good info and a better way to go than trying to fix a broken one . Herman

It takes 12v to properly power the light. You could rig something with a battery from most power tools to test it.

Impalas are WAY more plentiful then the Montes. Any time you need something for the Monte from a junk yard, double check if it's a matching Impala part (may save some frustrations).
