Default 3800 overheating

I'm thinking about buying 2003 Grand Prix GT for my daughter but the guy says its been overheating is it worth the time and money to fix? And any ideas on what the problem could be? The car looks to be in great shape other than this issue he wants 2500 for it. And Thanks guys.

Thermostat maybe or the fact that your coolant is just so clogged that its gumming up hoses and causing your car to over heat. Make sure and ask them if they have flushed the engine often and check the coolant to see what color it is. If its running brown thats most likely your issue.

you may want to check the lower intake/upper intake manifolds gaskets, the radiator's cap for leakage and the condition of the dexcool. if there's no visible signs of a leak it could be a pressure issue so checking the cap is always a good idea.

Most likely the engine will need its gaskets replaced.

Also the guy says it is overheatING, not overheatED. If he is running it and it's getting hot, more and more stuff can be getting warped and ruined. I wouldn't go for it.

Everything that can be said has been said. But I will agree with the UIM/LIM gaskets are probably in bad shape. Those are EASY to replace. Might need some TLC.
I'd look it over and listen to it and see what's going on.

Also, in my experience with a temp guage issue on a '97 Grand Prix, a trusted GM Mechanic friend of mine said the Pontiac guages tend to report the temp a little hotter then it really is. You may want to inquire what makes the owner believe it over heated. Perhaps it never really did.

Agreed! Those old stepper motors tend to be a little sticky. I would suggest to drive it for a day and see if the dex disappears, any leaks under the car or around the block.

Check the radiator hoses sometimes after awhile the get weak and can collaspe when you put the gas to the engine and restricts the flow

Only way to really know is drive it for a bit & check it all out but if it is overheating id stay away from it cuz it could end up being a big expense
