I have a 99 monte Z34..We replaced the intake manifold and now there is a loud screaming coming from the engine..it happens mostly at idling or when taking foot off of the gas..If you gas the car the whine goes away..it sounds like a ufo landing and is very loud. There is also a slight coolant smell (which is why we replaced intake manifold)..but smell is still there and now it cries like a baby..any help ! Thanks !

I have had a few cars with the 3.8 in it

94 bonnie 30,000 miles trouble free (traded in many years ago for a family van with a 4.3)
95 Monte (only wish she had a 3.8 in it) But the 3.1 has been troubled free as well... and still going strong with just over 100,000 mile on her
95 bonnie 98,000 miles replaced battery, Alternator and 3 ECM's ended up trading the car in on a 03 grand prix with a 3.4 in her.
2003 Monte with 60,000 no problems, but was replaced with by my 06 LTZ with 3.9
2000 Pont. Grand Prix with 92,000 still running strong with 3.8 non super charge
2002 Buick with 23,000 replaced the battery this past fall because the car does not get driven much but has been trouble free as well

YOU MIGHT SAY THAT I OWN A LOT OF SHARES IN GM.......

TPS sensor + tbgasket (was leaking on tps) at 202k think i put on an egr around 165k a used one for$40...alot better than like $300 for even aftermarkets.... all i can recall at the moment...

My shop has a '99 GP used byourVP of sales. He drove it daily until a few months ago, when the gear in the oil pump broke and siezed the engine. Boss got him a new Lacross. 235,000 when it broke.
We rebuilt the pump with a new front cover, a minor engine overhaul while it was apart, and now has almost 250,000 and still going. I think one transmission job.
That's why I drive a GM 3.8L daily 104mi. commuting to work.
Myproblems have been mostly trans' problems. This one is the HD + aux trans cooler.

My brother had a 98 Monte Z34 with the 3.8L, he had 323,000km on it when we rolled it. Tranny was just about shot, he had owned it since 190,000 km and did not have any major problems except lots of sets of brakes.

I purchased a 99 Monte Z34, has 133,000 on it now, had it since 93,000. Have only replaced brakes, tie rod and ball joints, oh, and a set of tires.

98 z34 3.8 upper intake failure resulting into water leaking into engine, blowing heads. 135k when it happened. new heads on runs like a champ. great car other than a faulty gasket that leaked.

'05 LT - 72,000 miles, daily driver, gets driven pretty aggressively, 2nd owner.

No parts replaced on my watch, though it is in need of some maintenance, none engine related. popping noise in the front end during low speed brake/turn, and a turbo spooling sound from the trans before it shifts. Rotors are probably due for replacement this spring. Gonna be expensive i'm sure, at least I can do the rotors myself.

2001 Monte Carlo SS
At about 94,000 miles now.

The AC Compressor went bad..Don't remember the cost, my parents got it fixxed for me while I was at bootcamp as a surprise..Hey Buffalos cold but it's also hot as hell during summer, especially with no AC and black leather seats lol..

A fuel injector went bad somehow...Car was in storage for about a year, was told that that was the reason. Another bootcamp gift from my parents, so I don't know the price, I do know it was the price of the injectors and labor.

That's it though, haven't had a single problem besides that.

My mother had a 2000 Impala with the 3.8l, drove the thing about 200 miles a day(Buffalo to Rochester and back plus alot more every day)..It had about 200k on it, then all the parts around the motor started to just go to **** so she got rid of it.

My step dad also had a 2002 Impala with the 3.8l...Made it to 80k before he got rid of it..Not a single problem with the motor..The tranny shifting into 2nd was pretty rough, but even my step dad admitted it was from him being "rough" with the car, lol

Wow, you guys have revived a nearly 3 year old thread!!!!

3.8L, 105,000 miles in an '03 for me! Just oil changes and changed the a/c compressor about 2 weeks after I bought it in March '07, with about 80,000 miles. The battery went dead last year and had to be replaced.... big deal about that!
