Default 3.8 Series II Engine

Series II(1995-2005) LS36
Introduced in 1995, the Series II is quite a different engine. Although the stroke for the 3.8 L engine remained at 3.4 in (86 mm), and the bore remained at 3.8 in (97 mm), the engine architecture was vastly changed. The piston connecting rods were 1 in (25 mm) shorter, so the crankshaft was redesigned. A new intake manifold improved breathing, and a new cylinder head had larger valves. The result was 205 hp (153 kW) and 230 ft·lbf (312 N·m), better fuel economy, and 26 lb (12 kg) lighter overall weight.
The 3800 Series II was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines10 list for 1995 through 2005.
L36 Naturally Aspirated
The L36 was the first Series II version of the 3800. It has a 96.52 mm bore and 86.36 mm stroke for 3.8 L (3791 cc) of displacement. Power is 205 hp (153 kW) and torque is 230 ft·lbf (312 N·m). It was first introduced in 1995.Over the years the 3.8 V-6 also benefitted from the latest in electronic engine management, and such refinements as improved combustion chamber and piston design. In the process it evolved into a very economical and reliable powerplant.

The 3800 Series became the standard workhorse engine for many of GM's cars.. It is virtually as smooth and quiet as a V-8, and has adequate power: 205 horsepower normally aspirated, and 240 supercharged.
In the early 21st century there is no doubt that the 3800 Series is an old design with its cast iron construction, and pushrods operating two valves per cylinder. In today's high-tech world GM's venerable V-6 will ultimately be replaced. And when it is, it will leave behind a remarkable history.

1. I have a 97 Bonneville with 160,000, My Monte has 80,000 and a buddy with a Grand Prix that just rolled 202,000 all L36 non-supercharged.

2. Both the bonneville and grand prix had upper intake failure. The Bonneville had an alternator replaced. Nothing so far on the Monte

3. Grand Prix had 150,000 or so and the Bonneville had 142,000(UIM) and 138,000 for the alternator

4. Cost was right at $240 for both with me doing the work(UIM). That included plugs, wires and oil change. The alternator was $149. All three have meticulous service records. Very well maintained, all run synthetic oil that is changed every 5000 miles. The grand Prix is beat on pretty regularly.

To me once the upper intake is dealt with these motors are one of the best out there. From what I have seen being a mechanic there are very little issues with them. The only other common issues I have seen on a regular basis is the crank sensor/ignition modual problems.

Hope this help ya.

Mine has pretty much been trouble free, so far.... (knocks on wood)

The stealership replaced the ISS around 26K along with the alt at the same time, I did not like the noise it was making and insisted they change it out before the warranty expired.

see i tried to get them to replace or repaint the counil in mine due to it starting to rub past teh rubber coating on it. they refuse to do it here. they say it is normal wear and thrfore i have to live with it.

the biggest grip i have is the rotors are warpping on it. So i have replaced them twice now. Next time i will get something like willow wood or bear brakes and rotors to put on to it. and be done with it.

Part of that is alot of mountian driving here and also high speed and long stops here.

that and ever german in the country stops and waits for anyone on the side streets to get in front of them .
Thier right of way is if your on the right and trying to get out to the main road the main road yeilds for you to do so.

Cant tell you how many times i have almost assholed a damed beamer here for it.
