The 3.6L V6 has 4 cams, 24 valves, direct injection, and better flowing heads.
The 3800 V6 has 1 cam, 12 valves sequential fuel injection, and horrible flowing heads.
However, this doesn't tell you the whole story. I bet that any NA 3800 is going to have better low rpm torque then the 3.6L DOHC V6's. Plus, it's MUCH easier to work on a 3800 then the new DOHC engines.

Based off a 40 year old design (though significantly changed on at least two or three occasions), but that didn't stop the Series III from becoming the FIRST gasoline motor in the automotive industry to achieve SULEV standards.

Interesting thread, my Sebring had a DOHC motor but I think it had taken a big beating before I got it, I love my 3800 no matter what the HP number is it still gets me from point a to b and looks damn sexy doing it lol, and can't complain about my gas mileage either.

it has lack of torque though. My girl test drove a 2011 charger v6 with a rated 292 HP. BUT because of such low torque, she said when she stepped on it the car went 'huh? Oh.. Go? Okay.. 1...2..3.. Heree.. Wee. Go!' and still barley moved. Torque is underrated with a lot of people, it's all about horsepower. Without torque, horsepower is moot.

I have a 3.8l MIVEC V6 produces 262hp at 5,750 rpm as a result of variable valve timing and lift. Torque can reach as high as 260 pound-feet at 4,500 rpm. 1/4mile in the 14's/low 90's. Its not as bulletproof as GMs 3.8L..I learn alot when I visit the MCF. My eclipse is a 5speed stick & i wish it was RWD.I want a new camaro S.S. soon

My Monte 3.8 has nice torque. I love it, makes it feel faster then it really is..
I drove a friends Camaro with the 3.6 and 6 speed. Very nice shifting gears a 7k rpm. The 3.6 is a nice running engine. It is in fact a fast car, handles nice to. Glad GM finally put an engine out that blows away the imports..

my dads mazda6 and the dealer that i worked at has the dohc in all there v6 and l4 and they reve forever. the v6 comes with the 6 speed front wheel driveit is very fast when the turbo aspect comes to mind as well i usually pay attention to the wrc and noticed that chevy wants to get back into it with the impala make it a rally car for the euro cercut as well as to keep up with the j-spec cars as well.the l4 mazda comes with the 4-5 speed auto as well as the 6 speed manuel but the v6 with the 6 speed what a combo. i havent test drove the impala with the 3.6 in it. but i noticed the diemler chrysler product is still trying to hold on to the old tech. mazda is pushing or well challenging ford to make there cars fun to drive as well to compete with them. but it is a shame when gm stoped producing the doch 3.4 it was the head gaskets they were putting on that sucks they could have still made it but updated the gaskets as well as do a volentary recall befor they broke to see and produce the technology longer for them. and it would have been a really good for our monte's to have a dohc it would have more monte's out there do to the power on demand for upgrades

I think the L67 was a good choice for the Monte to be completely honest. Although they should have introduced them when the motors came out (all the other W-bodies except for the Impala had them starting in 97) and then upgraded to the L32 in 04 when the Grand Prix did. The L32 may not put out 300hp, but it puts out more torque than nearly every other V6 out there. Torque numbers honestly mean more to me than horsepower. All hp is is a calculation based off torque (which is an actual unit of measure).

i know torqu gets you there hp keeps you there. but i am interested on the gms 3.6 dohc engin and trans combo in our montes as a option besides the ls4 and the l32. just wish how to mod the 6 speed from that impala to my 3.5 i would be happy. or swap the whole thing with the 3.6 and the 6 speed i would be happier ;P
