20 years ago....
Kurt B noted this anniversary on the Monte Carlo Mailing List before I had a chance to this evening....
20 years ago today (December 11) the Monte Carlo was discontinued. A quote from the GM restoration packet:
"The 1988 model year marked the end of an era. The Aero Coupe had been dropped. The Monte Carlo was made available in LS and SS versions only. After approximately 3 months of production, Chevrolet opted to completely cancel the Monte Carlo model. Sadly, production ceased on Friday, December 11, 1987, at 5:29 PM."
Heh ... can hardly believe it has been 20 years. Quite a lot has happened and changed since then....

I suspect that the Lumina tag wasn't very popular or got very little response or respect from the NASCAR contingency.
Thus the resurrection of the Monte Carlo intellectual property tag because the current Lumina tag had very little marketability.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the Monte Carlo.
I believe there will be another Monte Carlo in our future.
Just like when they ended production 20 years ago &
everyone thought it was the end of the Monte Carlo.
It was reborn again.....I think Chevrolet has a unique name
in the Monte Carlo. I'm hopeful that it will be ressurected again.
