05 RWD Conversion
hey, i gotta question, has anyone done (or heard of it being done) a rear wheel drive setup on a newer style monte? i have an 05 monte, and an 80 junker camaro, and an extra daily driver for downtime; and i was wondering if any of you knew how hard it would be to substitute the monte subframe for the camaro, or if the monte subframe had RWD motor mounting capibilities. i know there's gonna be a lot of cut and paste on the floorboard, and costom rear drive axle mounting. thats not what was hard to figure out though, its the engine and front subframe that is holding my plans back... any pointers?

RE: 05 RWD Conversion
I remember someone talking about this before. But it was a long time ago. I think they decided to just forget the idea because of what ExplosiveSoundz just said. Engineering nightmare. Plus the interior would have to be redone to accomodate the new hump in the floor. You'd most likely lose your center console.

But i like the newer body styles, plus, how sick would it be to pull up next to a 2000 (FWD V6) monte with intentions of racing, n that bad boy starts smokin them back tires n growlin like a rabid wolf lol..

Not only that, but have you looked at your monte's underside? The place that the drivetrain would have to go would be the same place the exhaust pipe is right now. The gas tank is exactly where you would need to mount a rear drive system... and not to mention trying to figure out a new way to mount an engine in there? The bay is small enough as it is!

RE: 05 RWD Conversion
And no offense, but my FWD v6 would kick the crap out of a standard 3800, let alone a 3800 rwd. and if you DID keep that 3800, you would end up wishing you had gone bigger, but can't, because the engine bay is too small...
Oh, and not to bash, but a standard 3800 doesn't really "smoke" tires. They can make them chirp, and sometimes on dry pavement you can make them squeel a bit, but I help my grandmother and drive her around in her 3800 regal, and it really isn't powerful enough to smoke tires.

yah, the subframe is the only thing i'm clueless about. i've got all other areas pretty well covered. its just that #$%^&ing front end... its driving me nuts. cuz if i'm not mistakin the monte sub is alluminum, which meens welding the center of the maro sub motor mount to the monte sub is out of the question.. it's mainly the shape diff in the subframes thats driving me nuts..
