Driving a station wagon or an SUV for people- and cargo-carrying capacity is not drudgery if the Malibu Maxx or TrailBlazer is festooned with the SS badge. By adding these two particular models to its family of sport-tuned SS models, Chevy gains a new dimension in the SuperSport legacy — everyday utility. The 5-door 2006 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx SS is the closest thing to a genuine station wagon at the bow-tie division, offering ample rear-seat leg room thanks to a 112.3-in. wheelbase, which is a half-foot longer than the sedan's. And yet, at 187.8 in. overall, the Maxx is actually a half-inch shorter than its three-box brethren. In addition to having loads of useful space on the inside, the SS is more than an exercise in badge engineering.

Beneath the hood is a 240-bhp 3.9-liter pushrod V-6, one of the first of its kind with variable valve timing. This helps produce 240 lb.-ft. of torque, 90 percent of which is available at 1800 rpm. A taller 3.69:1 final drive gives the Maxx snappy acceleration 0 to 60 MPH in under 7 seconds, although the front-drive setup is prone to a bit of torque steer, especially in the wet. Power is delivered via a 4-speed automatic. The console-mounted shifter has a unique tap-up/tap-down manual shift mode. The Maxx boasts stiffer springs at all four corners, large 4-wheel disc brakes (11.7-in. front and 10.6-in. rear rotors) and 18-in. wheels shod with P225/50VR-18 rubber. The ride is taut, yet smooth, thanks to the greater distance between the front and rear axles. Another bright spot is the steering, which has conventional hydraulic assist with excellent feedback and weight. This system replaces the vague electric boost steering found in regular Malibu models. While the materials inside are better than standard Malibu fare — the sport seats are a nice touch — the monochromatic black interior on all SS models comes off as a bit Spartan. The only bright spot is the chrome-ringed instruments that feature red pointers. Still, for those on a budget with families to move, the SS is affordably priced at $24,690.For those who aspire for something a bit larger and more powerful, the 2006 Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS has 395 bhp and 400 lb.-ft. of torque to offer from its 6.0-liter V-8. The power is delivered through a beefed-up 4-speed automatic transmission, and buyers can select either rear- or all-wheel drive. Chevy claims the vehicle is capable of 0-60 mph in just 5.7 seconds. The TrailBlazer looks every bit the SS with its black mesh grille, blacked-out rear-window pillars, sportier front and rear fascias and a decided lack of body cladding. The body is lowered an inch and the suspension features higher-rate springs and anti-roll bars front and rear. Huge 20-in. 6-spoke alloy wheels wearing 255/50VR-20 tires complete the look. Inside, the sport seats feature aggressive bolstering, and there are upscale touches like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, chrome and aluminum accents and a silver-faced tachometer with black lettering. The hunkered-down ride, throaty V-8 and snappy shifts of the 4-speed automatic make the TrailBlazer a hoot to drive in cut-and-thrust freeway commuting. The feel of the overall package is that of a hot-rod truck, sort of the spiritual successor to the GMC Typhoon. There is no pretense of off-road agility — the high-effort steering, taut ride and sure-footed awd system are about getting the power down and being able to corner with it.[b]Although down slightly on horsepower to the 420-bhp Jeep Gra

Malibu SS? Yes, they're serious

These are the six-cylinder Impala SSs of the day. As modern cars with modern weight and horsepower, they should do well, like the Pontiac G6 GTP with which they share the 240-horsepower, 3.9-liter high-value (i.e., pushrods) engine. Unlike the G6 GTP, there's no manual transmission option, just the four-speed automatic. The interior is designed in ebony, but you get a three-spoke steering wheel, an SS feature--and a choice of all-season or summer 225/50R18 rubber. As for styling, it's a question of taste, of course. Chevy car marketing chief Jim Campbell says he likes the Malibu SS front end.
