Default z34 transmission

I am just curious what other year/model vehicles share the same transmission as my vehicle, 96 monte z34.....I imagined anything 96-99 with a 3400 would work. Hopefully some of you gurus can fill me in on what I need.

95 and 96 Monte Z34s with the 3.4L DOHC had the 4T60E transmissions. Not as strong as the 4T65E that came in 1997 in the Z34. 97 was the crossover year, where they still had the 3.4L DOHC, but switched to the newer tranny. The 98 and 99 Z34s had the 3800 Series II with the 4T65E tranny.

The 3400 engine didn't exist in the Monte until 2000. it was in the LS model.

So, are you looking to update your tranny, or your engine? The DOHC is a powerful motor, but has its problems. If you're at 100k miles, and haven't done the timing belt, you will most likely need to soon. The 4T65E trannywasn't designed to hold anymore power than what the stock engine puts out... if you go with a stronger engine, you are risking breakage.

If you really want to spice things up in your 1996, go with the L67 swap, coupled with the 4T65E-HD tranny... you can pick thecombo easy from a wrecked 2000+ GTP, try and find a low mileage unit that was stock. Make sure you get the PCM as well from that year engine, since certain tables for MAF and tranny are specific to that year. Check motorswap.org for plenty more info on the L67 swap.

Sorry to have derailed the answer a little, but I was offering a suggestion without really knowing what you were trying to accomplish. Thx.

Im just looking to get it on the road. I purchased it for $300 knowing about the transmission problem. Not looking to much into performance, but more of a reliable, everyday car that gets more than 14 miles per gallon . It has its share of miles (140K), but I have nearly $4k in reciepts of work from the previous owner including brand new cylinder heads, and a ton of sensors, and work that go no farther back than 9/05.

So I take it the 1995 and 1996 have their own unique design? Any others that can bolt up to my stock engine?

nope our 3.4 engines got specific timing in the trany even though the 3100's have the same 4t60e the internal gearing is different.

if you chose to have a rebuild done i highly recomend doing a gear swap to 3.73 gears doesnt cost all that much (info at 60degreev6.com) and not only does it make the car faster, it takes the load off the trany when driving at lowers speeds and helps the trany to last longer, also i recomend a shift kit too.

my last rebuild i had a higher stall Tq converter put in, the 3.73 gears, a trany cooler, and a transgo shift kit. the trany is deff stronger and im very happy
