Default upgrading an engine?

hi, a while ago i have posted that i got a 350 engine but that ended up being a problem and didnt work out. and i think since thats not gunna be a permenant engine i'll want, then i should just go a little further. i have seen quite a few 383 strokers for sale at a decent price and iam shure thats what i want. i have a 78 monte carlo with a 305 v8. i'm not even shure what my transmission is andi cant seem to find out. i'm looking for power out of my car so i'm shure after installing a 383 i'll have to upgrade quite a few things. what all will i have to upgrade on my car???

depends on how much horse or torque you plan to put out of that 383. Tranny wise my friend has an 86 Monte SS. Hes got a 350 bored slightly over 4bbl carb,msd,headers,true-dual exhaust, To much to list. And so far his 700R4 he had rebuilt has held up. What are your exact plans or rather what would you like to do to your Monte and im sure i could get that info from my friend.

Richardstheman, lets start out with the tranny. You need to count the transmission pan bolts and draw a out line of the shape of the pan. You can take that information look here:

1 Aluminum Powerglide
14 bolts
2
TH200 Metric11 bolts
3TH350 13 bolts
4 TH400 13 bolts
5
TH200-4R16 bolts
6
TH700-R4, 4L60, 4L60E16 bolts
54L80E

You need to match you your tranny with your rear end also. a vehicle originally equipped with a TH350 will have a different rear than a 700r4.
A 350 or better a 355ci with a good cam, intake, carb and ignition system will be very nice.
One thing you you'll need to get with a 383 is life insurance . I have had a few 350'f that would go high 12's to low 13's all day. Just remember that going from a 305 to a hot 383 will be likenight and day. You'll start braking stuff too. Depending on your needs a 350 is quite the champ with a little extra cash to spend on other goodies.

this is all very helpful. the reason i was leaning toward a 383 stroker is because i figured for an extra couple grand i could have alot more horse power but idk about that if i'll be using this car as my daily driver. how much horse power is your 350 if your et is 12-13? and i was looking at turn key motors and i would like to get that so its all ready to go. basicly what i want is a small block racecar. it doesnt have to be absolutely insane but something that will sound DAMN GOOD be really quick. check this motor out on e-bay and let me know what you think of the specsfor the price.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHEVY...Q5fAccessories also, i didnt look to see what my transmission is yet but i'll check that out. i know i can get it rebuilt for a total of 400 dollars so if i can keep the one i have then that would be nice.
