Very true, there is a gamble if its good or will last but there usually cheap enough it don't matter much as long as it lasts a little while. Or he could get lucky and score a good one cheap and it could last a long time I've seen jy trans last a long time as well.

In my eyes its not worth it because you don't know how worn the clutches are and if all the friction material is gone now its metal on metal, metal going in all the bearings, torque converter, valve body and channel plate.... remember I said as of now the hard parts should be fine well if you do the $25 bandaid it could trash the whole thing. And clutches, solenoids, bands are not $3000 and if labor cost takes it that high then I need to open up a 4t65 rebuild shop because Ide be rich ![ROTFL](https://montecarloforum.com/forum/images/smilies/lmao.gif)

Remember he has been sleeping on a couch and his coin is tight. Maybe if he can save a few bucks and get down the road for a few more miles without bankrupting himself, the opportunity will come along when he has enough money to do a proper rebuild. Just my been there done that situation. My ZR2 S-10 is still going three years later and the GMC Sierra is still limping along 1.5 years later. Sometimes bandaids can stave off an expensive repair. Knock on wood, knock knock knock.
it's a roll of the dice, I know what your saying is true, pay now or pay later.

Hey guys, I really appreciate all the great advice. I had posted this in another part of the forum as well, so forgive me for not replying here quickly. To answer your question, I had the fluid and filter changed about a year and a half ago, so I guess I"m within the time frame, at least with the fluid change.
I just got off the phone with a different local transmission place and the guy was very knowlegable, and his shop is a rebuild shop, 25 years in business. His base price was around $1500 to rebuild the tranny that's in the car now, the 4t65e, and will do all the upgrades it needs. Now if there is more damage visible once he gets inside, the price could go up. But over all it does seem a more reasonable option, seeing as how I could save a lot of dough, IF he doesn't find additional problem(s). He listed a number of basic parts that are included in the rebuild price. This is sounding like a better option to me. What do you guys think? Thanks, much appreciated!

Idk where you live but consider having Dave at tep rebuild your trans. He specializes in the 4t65 and IMO is the best 4t65 trans builder around. Just another suggestion.

That's awesome, I got lucky and sourced practically every gmr part made for the 4t65 for this build so I'm hoping I can keep this one together for a while!

That's a bit of a haul to Indiana but well worth his quality in work. I didn't realize I abbreviated the name of the shop in habit lol. Its triple edge performance.
