tranny slipping? or something else?
hey guys. I've been having a few problems when driving. the first is when I'm at a complete stop and give it gas, the car revs up a bit, doesn't go anywhere, then drops and goes. the second is when I'm driving for a little while and the car gets warm, the tranny shifts kinda hard, but if i shut it off and wait a bit, its fine. the motor and tranny have 63,XXX miles on it, so i dunno if it just needs the pan dropped and filter changed. I also heard that it could be the CAT? im running a diagnostics reader tomorrow to see if its throwing a code. But if anyone has any info with this, it would be much appreciated. thanks guys.
There are a few opinions regarding the complete flush of a trans with a few miles on it. Personally, I would replace the filter and whatever amount of trans oil comes out when you do. Others swear that a complete flush is the way to go. I've had a few transmissions go bad on me due to a complete flush, so I tend to stay away from them, unless I'm rebuilding it and that goes without saying. A complete flush changes the trans oil viscosity/composition and adds new oil with very strong detergents that will weaken the trans clutches and allowing them to slip/fail.
If this has change because of new trans oils then, please, someone tell me. In the meantime, I'll stick with the filter change and adding the oil that's lost due to it.

If you do a complete flush, it can cause the metal shavings that have made themselves at home in the moving part to come loose, then there is too much slack and it causes problems later on. Just change the fluid and the filter, skip the flush.
It could be your cat but that should throw a code (P0420). With the cat it should be showing a lack of power thoughout.

I would change your fluid, and go from there...
IMO, your best bet is to drop the pan, change the filter, and refill. In our cars, this gets about 60% of the old transmission fluid out. If you really want to replace ALL the fluid, then about 5,000 miles later, drop the pan again, and change the fluid. This will replace pretty much all the fluid, yet not "shock" the transmission all at once. It kinda gives the new fluid a chance to "break in" before you add more new fluid.
If none of this fixes your problem, then I would look into you CAT and make sure it is not the problem...
Do all of this before taking it in for transmission problems!
