Default Timing Belt

My 03 SS is getting near 100k and Im going to change the timing belt. Just curious if anyone has any sugestions. I'll change plugs/wires/filters/ and all that good stuff, just for piece of mind. I dont have a lift, but my shop is well equipped.

Your engine doesn't have a timing belt. 3800s have timing chains. If your engine is stock, there is probably little to no wear on your tensioner.

Unless you:

1) are planning on tearing your front cover off to do a cam,

2) are planning on doing higher ratio rockers,

3) have an oil leak coming from your front cover.

leave your timing chain alone. You have to tear alot off your engine to get at it.

What I would suggest you do is L26 aluminum intake gaskets, since the 3800s with the L36 tend to start having intake gasket leaks eventually, especially with a dexcool system that isn't maintenaned properly. There are lots of write-ups on doing the lower intake gaskets... read up, and let us know if you have any questions.

Good luck.

Excellent! I'm still getting familiar with these engines, as you can tell! I appreciated the input, the car was used to commute to and from college (around 50 miles one way) daily before I bought it. Everything is clean and no leaks, so I'll forget about the timing chain.
