Default Thermostat change ...

As I have read here & there around MonteCarloForum.com , I see one mod that nearly everyone makes, if they have made some either major or even minor mods ... The change? 180* Thermostat swap. As I have investigated, it appears that a 195*'er is OEM recommended.

As I sit here, I am collecting various items I am going to need for some general maintenance (filters, oil, plug wires, etc.), major audio system upgrade(s), etc. Someone care to convince me to add a 180* 'stat to my "Cart"? What manufacturer?

Anything, & everything, will definitely be appreciated.

Be good, folks,

Zeke

PS: If there are any Qs about what I am doing for the audio system, feel free to ask, ... It is the most aggressive system to date for me ... Not necessarily in terms of actual components, but in peripheral things I am undertaking to make everything sound better, etc.

stat is a bad idea. 180 isn't recommended because it makes the car run cooler and it may not properly warm up. worst case scenario you wind up with a check engine light. po128 i think.... not warming up within a certain amount of time. secondly the car runs slightly higher rpms at warm up to do it in a more timely and efficient manner. warming up or getting to ideal operation temp for extended or indefinate time burns extra fuel. the only upside is that you may experience a slight boost in torque. kinda like when you take off right away in the morning. 180 stat may benefit you more after performance mods but if ur staying relatively stock just get a superstat from napa. stays open when it fails. which throws a light before you'll notice anything. and while it fails open (if it fails at all) you can see what running a cooler engine does. stay 195

huh, autozone gave me the 180*. That was supposed to be the right one. The weather has been warm ever since, so I guess I will see what happens in winter.

autozone people usually dont know a grade 8 bolt from a banjo bolt same with advanced. find a parts professional somewhere before you wind up with using octane booster lol 180 is the alternate temperature for almost any car built in the last 20 years. there are a few exceptions but a mc isn't one of em

like said if your not doing any changes to the engine just run a stock one. a 180 is not really going to cause problems... most switch to a 195 during the winter though. for the extra heat.

unless you are changing the fan turn on temps in the computer, the fans will still turn on way past 195 so its not like you wont ever warm up.

Running a 180* isn't bad for the car. Although its benefits aren't utilized unless your fans are set to turn on at an earlier time than 212*. The engine code is from using a 160* thermostat.

The point of the modification is that these engines like to run cool. If you run them cooler they have better use. Since the engine is made out of Iron, it gets hot. And as you probably know from driving around during a hot day in traffic, these cars are dogs when they are hot. So people like to drop in a 180* thermostat to help keep the car cooler. Of course this only really works on the highway if you have stock fan turn on points.

In the winter the heat won't be that poorly affected. Yes it will be noticeable, but it's not a deal breaker for me.

i live in florida and my monte loves the 180 stat because it helps cool it. when it was at the dealer getting warenty stuff done on it i asked if they could change it out for some preventitive mantenence. they said it was the cause of the warrenty problem because it disentergrated in the engine so pluged up a water jacet. they put in a 180 they asked if i wanted to go with a 160 one and they would take care of every thing i told them no. i will go with the 180. you will notice the fans come on sooner then the normal time dont worry it is a good thing, just make sure you try to flush the system because you will loose some. the reason why your all ready there with some anti to top it off.
