Default So, my buddy has this supercharger......

He wants 100 bucks for it and I think I want it. Its off a gtp and I've got an 01' 3.8L Monte. Does anyone know if this is a good deal and if it will fit my car? Will my ECM know what to do with a supercharger? And what all will I have to replace to install it? I've got a buddy with HP Tuners and he's agreed to tune it if necessary to allow for the supercharger if I just reimburse him for the cost of his credits.

It's fairly cheap for a supercharger. However, you will need to replace your entire top end with that of an L67. Heads, LIM, harmonic balancer, injectors, you have to do something with the MAP sensor, throttle body. That's what you need, but I'm sure I'm leaving something out. Your car will need to be tuned to run with the supercharger. Tuning is in no way my specialty - perhaps you could ask people on the HP tuners website that have done top end swaps on these motors. Good luck.

Looks like I'm gonna have to try and deal him out of his top end. I may even try to see if he will just part with the whole engine. How much do you think i should offer him and do you think I could swap ECM's also? its $100 bucks for the credits needed from hp tuners so if i can swap the ECM then that's probably what I'm gonna end up doing.

You can do whats called a "Top Swap" off of an L67 onto your L36 (3800 NA). It consists of taking the Supercharger, Lower Intake Manifold, and heads. Harmonic Balancer I dont think is necessary.

Here is a site,

If you go south of the decision and choose not to, here's some more sites to beef up your L36, and this goes for anyone thats got a 3100 up to a 5 whatever is in the new Monte's

I'm pretty sure you DO need the harmonic balancer from what I've read. The PCM he has in his car will not work with yours, it has something to do with the compression I think but I don't know exactly. Try to offer him $500 for the top end.

Harmonic balancer is necessary- the L67 has 2 belts, 1 for accessories and 1 for the SC- therefore if you add the SC, you need to add a belt, and the L67 balancer has 2 belt drives on it. You'll also need other stuff as well like the MAP sensor, TB and its sensors, fuel rail, fuel injectors, and the SC pullies for its belt drive- among other things.

Only way to get out of doing the balancer is to use ZZP's SSM90 kit which uses the accessory belt- and also does some other stuff differently. Its a lot more expensive, but a lot easier to install.

if i can swap the ECM then that's probably what I'm gonna end up doing.
Thats not going to work either. It would run the engine fine, but your problem will be the transmission. Your car has a regular 4t65 which has a 3.29 final drive; his car has a 4t65HD which has a 2.93 final drive- so the shift points are different. You need to have a place do a custom pcm with a setup for an L67's sensors and a regular 4t65 transmission. Its pretty cheap for them to do- maybe $100.

IMO, a lot of the stuff on the 3800 performance site is gimmicky crap. The 3 main places for 3800 mods right now are:

www.zzperformance.com (probably one of the biggest innovators in the 3800 market)
www.wbodystore.com (some cool products, but much smaller than zzp)
www.intense-racing.com (haven't been in the 3800 market for awhile, but still have a lot of good stuff available)

also, for some specific, custom stuff:

www.prjperformance.com
