OK, so both fans work if power is applied directly to them. I am still at a loss for where the temp sensor for the fans is located. Anybody know or have an FSM and can look it up for me? TIA.

I think I found it. Beneath the radiator hose, screwed into the manifold what looks like from the bottom up or into the side of it. Anyway the top of it points down at an angle.

Well, I got the ever elusive temp sensor replaced and no help. D**n that thing is difficult to get to. I don't think it could be worse. So, I suppose next step is PCM given the A/C doesn't work either and it controls both. Does the PCM actually fail and if so what would be my other symptoms and do I really have to take it to the dealer to set that thing up? Thoughts anyone?

You've checked all the fuses and relays right? Tried cleaning the connectors to the sensors ? Then i'd say time to hand a leg to the shop and see if they can figure it out . Unless somebody else here has some input

the factory settings in the PCM for fan turn on temp is very high. a 1998 Z34 fan #1 will turn on at 222.83* F and turn off at 219.17* fan #2 will turn on at 230* F and off at 226.41* F.... also although the pcm has settings for the fan to run when the engine is off, the timer is set to 0 factory to remove it.

a new stock PCM will not fix this. you need someone with a tuner to reprogram the turn on temps so they work.

Excellent reply. Thank you! The fans actually are working when the guage is between 5/8 and 3/4 on the dial, whatever temp that is. The fans run until the temp drops to about 5/8 then go off. Seems to me like the temp is a little hot at this point. The temp hovers between 3/8 and just below 1/2 on the dial when the car is moving. I think this seems more like it. Now I'm wondering if the radiator is just not getting the job done. Thoughts anyone?

coolant flushed and thermostat changed. no change per se' in the temp except the temp seems to hover around midpoint on the gauge almost all the time. i don't drive this car regularly. anyone advise what is normal?
