Maybe it's just the SS that I'm thinking about. Having the different gears than the L67 powered cars.

So you have different gearing? Or do you mean the newer 06-07 SS?

michael, our montes have 2.86:1 final drive ratio. the 3.9L and 5.3L have the 3.29:1 final drives.

i believe the 6th gens have 3.29s also on the L36s and the L67s have a 2.93

You win...LOL. I went and found some thing about 4T65E tanny's on Wikipedia, and holy crap there is like a million different versions of it and gear ratios!

It's over at the chevy dealer now but does anyone have a rough estimate on how much a new trans is going to run me?
As the others have said- used is the way to go. You should be able to get a decent mileage used one for $500 or so. Try looking up moradpartscompany.com they specialize in wbody parts- or try looking on clubgp; but I definitely wouldn't let them go to town replacing new stuff and killing you on labor like dealers normally do.
