Default Help please! 4t60-E swap

Hi guys, I own a 95 Monte Carlo Z34 with the 4t60-E auto transaxle. I recently blew mine and swapped a 4t60-E out of a 93 3.4 Lumina without knowing the electrical complications from the 92-93 to 94-97 model transmissions. My car only has reverse and 2nd gear, i'm assuming because it is in fail safe mode. Also, soon after starting the RPMS gradually keep rising eventually until the motor reaches about 2,500 RPMS and this car never did that before. I've heard a few different things short of doing the whole process all over again with my years transmission such as replacing micro chips from my car's PCM to the donor car's PCM, and rewiring of harnesses from transmission solonoids. ANY help would be appreciated because I have absolutely no clue what to do and i've already put so much time and effort into doing all this I would just about do anything other than pull it out and swap it again.

Man that sucks... I can't give you the advice that you need, but I'm sure there is another member here with the experience that you need. Good luck.

I don't know much about the inner workings or interchangability of these transmissions, which is why I'm about to spend $1,600 to have someone else rebuild mine. I can tell you that there are many "versions" of the 4t60e out there though. I just googled that tranny and found that in 1995 alone, there were 20 different model numbers assigned by GM to the 4T60E, due to subtle differences among them. For example, here's a list of final gear ratios in the 1995 4T60e - 2.73, 2.84, 2.93, 2.97, 3.05, 3.06, 3.33, 3.43, 3.69. I can only imagine the differences from year to year of manufacture.

Hopefully what you have can be made compatible. If no response on this web site, maybe a local tranny shop can provide you with some free or cheap guidance.

What torque converter are you using, the Z34 or the Lumina's? The Z34's trans has a higher TC/higher gears than the Lumina's 4T60-E. Also, did you just dropped the trans in? Or did you rebuilt the trans? You could have bought a bad trans to start with. When you rev up the engine, does the car move while in any of the forward gears that isn't 2 gear? If it's a compatibility issue, more than likely, your best bet would be to get on either from another 95 Z34/equally compatible model GP/Bonnie.

There might be a difference too with the 95 being on an OBD 1.5 system and the 96 is OBD-II (don't quote me on that). Hope you get it figured out.

Sorry for the late response, I used the TC from the 3.4 Lumina, though. And as far as the OBD 1 or 2 thing I have no clue how to even tell... the dealer told me the tranny supposed to be in my car is a 5pbw... the one I just put in is a 3cw I believe. I read on a forum somewhere else that it's possible to repin the connectors and have things work right but then again I dunno. I'm contemplating getting the PCM out of the donor car and switching my microchip into that PCM? I'm not sure if that will work but i'm willing to try anything! Let me know if there is any more information you guys need out of all this and i'll do my best to get it posted, thanks for all the help.

You may need to transfer the valve body wiring harness, solenoids & electrical connector into the case and replace the TC with the Z34's. Now the gearing may be off as well, so taking the Z34 differential/final drive gears maybe necessary as well.

I would look for another 5pbw instead, from a 95 grand prix gt or another z34 and save the headaches of trying to match components.

I posted on this topic last night and was so tired, I didn't hit" submit"

The computer should be fine on that trans being obd1. All vehicles by gm used obd1 until 96 when it became law to switch all cars to obd2.

The only reason the computer wouldn't agree is if it has a differant gear ratio.

Well, according to this web site http://www.gmtuners.com/transmission/index.htm, the two transmissions in question have the same specs (except a small diff in the TC stall speed), so maybe if the connector issue can be addressed, the swap will work.
