Default Fuel Problem

Ok here is the Issue:
Car will not run. It will turn over and start but will shut off after about 2-3 sec. after a few attempts, i got it running but would struggle to idle. fuel trims max out to 16 and wont go any higher as this is the limit on my 96's PC my trims are normally +- 4% I tested fuel pressure and key on engine off i get 32psi. engine running i get 18psi and saw one blip where it climbed to 41 then fell. vac line to Fuel pressure reg made no diff in pressure. before testing fuel pressure i did get a P0171 Bank 1 lean. the fuel filter was replaced about 2 months ago. MAF, MAP, TPS, O2 sensors all appear to display normal data.

My conclusion: Fuel pump. either the strainer is blocked or something is causing it to have drastically reduced output. Only neg is unlike the 2nd gen Wbody i have to drop the tank to get at pump. so figured i would post up for ideas of other things to check before i drain my 12 gal i have and drop it. i already have a new fuel pump and strainer for it and will pick up a new fuel filter to swap in while down there. so any suggestions would be appreciated :-)

Hi `David, sorry to read about the problem with your Z
Sounds like a bad fuel pump, but it could have been caused by BAD `Gas from a Station that clogged the line ?

Do you buy gas from the same station or different stations ?
I've read many that had same or similar problems caused by bad gas from old station pumps or when they are very low & pick up debris...

Did your Monte have these symptoms b-4 you put the 12 gallons in ? I've read that when your tank is really low it can also pick up crap in a close 2 empty tank..

Good Luck & I hope more member's post their thoughts/opinions...
p.s. Great to see you online...How's life in Daytona Beach ?

Sorry forgot to mention. have been on the same tank for about a week with no problems before this started... so dont think it is bad gas but thank you for ideas.

im thinknin that you could've had some debris accumulate in your lines or maybe it is your pump.

Fuel pressure is low and the p0171 is a system lean. If injectors were stuck open it would be system rich... But keep the suggestions coming!

could the injectors be out of sequence? like they are firing too rapidly and filling the cylinders with too much fuel?

If you are getting decent pressure with KOEO but you lose your pressure with KOER then it does sound like your fuel pump is weak. Still the original pump?

Did you run a fuel pressure test at the manifold and inline between the tank and fuel filter? If not, I would so you can determine where you are losing pressure prior to dropping the tank. If you lose pressure inline it is most likely the pump or an obstruction in the tank. If you have good pressure inline but lose it at the manifold it is most likely an obstruction somewhere in the feed lines (bent/crimped fuel line?) or the fuel pressure regulator.
