Default EVAP code thrown, where to start?

I had the ODBII throw an evap code, P0440 or 0442. I checked the Haynes manuals and it states that the codes mean a general system malfunction or a small leak, respectively. Without paying up the ash to get an engine diagnostic, smoke test and blah blah blah, where are some places I should start looking at under the hood to see if I can fix it myself? I have no idea where some of the hoses are or the solenoid, much less if they are even the problem. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.
