engine ticking/knocking... please help!

Running too small of a pulley might work for a long time if you rarely "get on it". The engine damaging knock typically doesn't occur in the lower RPM range. Running poor fuel is another factor that can cause detonation & detonation (knock) is bad for these engines...
You still have the problem of a plug with a mark on it and zero gap; I've never seen detonation do that; it's possible that a rod is starting to come loose and the piston is traveling further than it's supposed to be (rod bearing or wrist pin). OR, the piston is coming apart. As turbo mentioned, find a scope, or borrow one if you can.

WOOT, glad I'm not smoking something that everyone else wants
Only other thing I can think of on this, is that the wrong plugs (longer) than normal were installed. (which is probably unlikely)...

i always run atleast 92 octane. i think my next step is gonna be to check the rod bearings cause a friend also mentioned that but to me it really sounds like the noise is in the top end but it can also be heard under the car so its really hard to pinpoint it. i haven't really looked but can the pan be dropped without pulling the motor? the autolite 104s are the same length as stock just 2 notches colder. i checked em b4 i installed them and they are what 3800 performance recommends and also.... they were in there for 2 years so if they were too long i would think it woulda been an instant catastrophe

im not even sure how to inspect rod bearings but i will say this, to drop the oil pan you need to support the engine from up top and drop the engine cradle. i will also say i would never in a million years try inspecting rod bearings etc unless the engine was out of the car and on a engine stand.
and i still say before you go through all of that SCOPE THE PISTONS THROUGH THE SPARK PLUG HOLE!!!!!!!!!
check for misfires, put factory coils and wires back on it!!!! then go from there.
