Default RE: Engine Belts

long answer to a short question....

i think they use to recommend replacing at 20 or 30k, but with the new body style back in 99 gm's full sized trucks started getting ones made out of a different material and i belive they recommended replacing them at 100k. since then theyve slowly been putting them on more and more cars, and making replacement belts with the newer material availible.

now, they usually last considerably longer than that so long as the belt doesnt get any fluids on it, pulley alignment is good, and tensioner/adjustment is good. i've had a cheap belt ona beater car go 80k before i finally replaced it after seeing some chunks of ribs missing, although not ever actually having a problem with it.

as far as factory vs. aftermarket. on a car only a few years old i'd probly just go factory to not worry about it. generally i dont think theres much difference, some 'aftermarkets' supply original equipment anyway. and i think the newer materials are availible in the aftermarket too,. it might just be a matter of the grade of belt you buy factory or aftermarket and how much they cost.

do not buy it from gm....you'll pay double the price for the same belt, dayco makes the belt of acdelco...go with the dayco belt

if you want let me know what engine you have and year and i'll give you the dayco part # for the belt for your car...

personally i'm not a millionaire and dont see the point in taking my car to gm and paying at least double what you'd pay anywhere else

...this is just an example....

yesterday i had a gm dealer call me...price out a hub for a 1999 chevy astro 4wd, its an expensive one...i told him his cost was 369, lists out @ 848 (list is generally what the garage sells the part for), so he turns to the customer and tells him 1500 bucks plus install plus tax... then the customer flips and tells him no way...so he says..maybe i can do it for 1200!!!! why would they need to make 1000 bucks on one part????? thats crazy..and i'm sure this happens a lot...if a person doesn't know whats going on they're just going to say go for it..it needs to be done...but then if they woulda came in here we woulda quoted a little more than we quoted the garage...but not that much more!!! thats rediculous!!

sorry ...just dont like to see people get ripped off when they can get it other places for waaay cheaper and they're the same parts they use

honestly the one belt i would by for the montes seems to have good reviews and also nott o bad in price is the goodyear gator belt.
they also tend to be quieter from what i have heard.
Personally i would love to find one that sounds like a gear drive or a blower under the hood LOL
just to make folks think before they talk to much trash LOL

2003 mc ls 3.4

I know what you mean. I got screwed the last time. I ask them how much A tranny flush would be on my truck I used to have. And they said it would be about $129.00 I thought that was a little high, but it was a truck.. Well it turn out to be $250.00. Oh....... I didn't say anything, because It's pointless to argue. I just won't back.
