Default dieseling

Hello everybody! I have a 1981 Monte Carlo with a 229 cid V6. Every so often, the car will diesel when I shut it off. Lately, it has be doing it very badly. Does anybody have any ideas on how to stop this? Also, to anybody else with this engine, what kind of gas mileage are you getting? Thanks!

do you have a mecanical fuel pump or a electric one? that out of the way it could be in need of a tune up replace cap rotor wires and plugs. there also may be a problem with the ignition switch and the conectors. i had the same problem with my dads mercury cougar it ended up being the switch feeding power to the system leving it on for a few seconds then turning off. i would do the first simple thing first like the tune up get that out of the way just to see thats not the problem. then go after the ignition wires and the cylender. i would replace the cylender for gigles and get it out of the way just the odvus things are out of the way and also can be over looked

you might want to check your timing. ive had this happen when running a ton of timing, but mine would usually do it in summer not winter. if you cant figure it out you can also shut the car off in gear. it shouldnt do it then. just make sure to put it in park before you get out and walk away.

Carbon buildup in the combustion chamber and cooling system obstructions can cause hot spots that produce dieseling. A vacuum leak causing a high idle or binding linkage that holds the throttle plate open can also cause dieseling. Other causes could be overheating, low octane fuel or ignition timing.

I completely agree with Mike!(03SSLE)

Look into all of these issues to fix your problem!

Nicely put Mike!
