Default Compatible Transmissions

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum and am going to be asking a lot of technical questions. My girlfriends got a 2000 Monte Carlo SS with the 3.8L motor. Her transmissions going out, and I've heard that this is common on the Monte Carlos. Is there a rebuild kit for them? Or is it going to be easier buying a different transmission? What years are compatible an what makes?

You guys have been there so whats the best route?

Thank you,
Colby

I know you are look for the best economical solution, but I would still look at having a local shop rebuild it with a shift kit and upgraded internals. Buying used tranny's is like rooling the dice. Unless you get from someone you know or with a warranty there is no guarntee that it will last.

I have considered the vary thing you say, we may get the same caliber of transmission we have now...

however, this is a daily driver and we need a fix

years and other variations of transmissions would be nice!!!

I'd contact moradpartscompany.com and see if they have any trans available. They usually have some short warranty. Either that or you could look on the forums for a lower mileage used one too, but as said above- its possible it has been abused.

actually u cant just use any tranny from any year 98-02 are only interchangeable with those years 03 is a whole nother beast on its own 04-05 changed again 06-08 have different electronics altogether then u have to look at the 3 different gear ratio u can get along with the hd or non hd tranny its a pita unless u mach build codes trust me i just went throught this looking for one =for my car i lucked out and found another 03 tranny with 1k miles on it for 300 at a salvage yard in kentucky these cars had more options than u can dream of
