Opinion Needed: Compatibility
In the future I am thinking of replacing the original 305 in my 85 SS. I am only interested in 350s or 400s. Which years of these engines would be a simple bolt in to my car? It’s a non computer car. Thank you. Jim
That's the beauty of the Small Block Chevrolet; swapability. A short block from any year will bolt right in.
For a 350, a long block from 1967-1972 won't have bolt holes in the heads for accessories such as generator or AC compressor. A long block from 1973-1986 would allow all the stuff on your '85 to bolt right on.
The 400 was introduced in 1970 and produced for ten years. The heads for the 400 are unique in that they have steam holes meaning if you replace the heads with non-400 specific heads, you'll need to drill steam holes into them.
