Car drifts backward when on hill in drive
Hi, just wondering.... My car is starting to drift backwards when i come to a stoplite or stop sign on a hill when its in drive.... Is this a sign of tranny troubles or is this normal... Never noticed it much before....

RE: Car drifts backward when on hill in drive
Wizz, no worries mate, all my cars have done it, even brand new ones.
Its simply GM putting in a very mild low RPM stall speed torque converter.
The engine is spinning the TC fluid (torque converter) instead of the trans itself.
Then when the car needs to go, the rpm raises and the torque coming through the converter increases, overriding the pull of gravity. If you play it real cool, you can give it just a hair of throttle, just enough and it will actually stop rolling back, without even rolling forward.
It's just the nature of automatic transmissions.

but using the engine to hold the car is bad.... your increasing load on the trans and it is right at the slip speed of the Tq converter.... this generates more heat and will be hard on the trany.
