Default Cam help

Eight years ago Hot Rod published a story about getting 300 horse out of a 350 for 500 bucks. They almost pulled it off, getting 281 horse and close to 400 foot pounds of torque. This was done with a Q-jet, stock heads with a 3 angle valve job, a swap meet Weiand intake, 1 3/4 headers(a little too big I think) .030 taken off the heads, and a Summit cam. The cam was rated at 214/224 at .050. Theysaid if they were to change anything, they would go with some porting and polishing and a less conservitive cam. I have always wanted to copy this combo and go with the improvements they stated. What would be a better cam for this? I was checking out Summit, and the next step up in a cam has 224/234 @ .050. This seems a little much to me. I wasn't going to go with a wild converter, maybe 1800 rpm stall, is this cam to much for it? Also, does shaving the heads to up compression affect mounting the intake at all? Oh, I plan on going with 1 1/2 or 1/ 5/8 headers with dual 2 1/2 exhaust.

Default RE: Cam help

the 214/224 at .050 cam would be fine for a mild motor if you want a little bit more go with a 1.6 roller tip rocker
if you go with the 224/234 @ .050.cam i would put a 2200-2500 stall torque and for headers 1 1/2 should be plenty with 2.5 dual pipes good flowing mufflers
and as for the heads i would go with the valve job, gasket match the ports and polish the bole
