Automatic to Standard
I have a 82 Monte Carlo. This car is automatic on the column.I want to make a 1/4 mile car out of it so I obviously need a change of tranny's so what would be my best best on a tranny and how I would go about converting it.

well knowing what engine you are going to use would be your best bet at deciding the trans. but if you are going to make it a 1/4 car you may even keep it auto. really if your building a 1/4 car nothing will be the same and it all depends on that special number that you want to acheive. remember a car is only as fast as its owners pockets are deep

the 200-4R is a GREAT tran. it got a deep first gear and they're readily available. however, your stroker is going to be pushing more HP than they're used too. either purchase a new tran from Art Carr that can handle all that power, or buy a remanufacured unit and reinforce the h3ll out of it.

you can get a 200 or 700r4 built to withstand that hp easily. it's been done b4. they just cost lots more to build up than other trannies. i would buy a TH400 core (even a TH350 would pry work) and have a tranny shop build it up. it will be cheaper than building a 200r4 to take that hp. plus TH400s are all over the place and are tough as nails even stock. you could pry pick up a used one for a decent price on ebay or craigslist.

the TH400 are monsters man. My Apache had a383 stroker and would literally granaded TH350s left and right, So i went to the junkyard and pulled me a TH400 from a tow truck. All i did was just change the oil and filter. Never gave me another problem again.

im currently running the 700 in my monte and im prolly putting out 425hp with the 406. the first gear is deep though. the 200 is supposedly the better choice not as deep a first gear and not as huge of a drop from 1-2 shift. ive also run a long tail 350 in it and didnt have a problem execpt on the highway. i think it all depends on what you want to build. if its mostly a drag car/weekend cruiser id go with the 350 its light, tough, and a ton of ppl can build one to take some punishment. on a side note you dont have to swap the tranny if your only issue is the column shift. also what gearing are you running and what stall speed converter you planning on?

It has 4:11's in the rear end... But wat I need to know is the car is automatic on the column and I don't think there's enough room in the floor bored to fit a clutch so I want to put the shifter on the floor but can I go standard or is hydromatic as close as I'm gonna get?
