Default 95 ECM Swap

Hey everyone,

I have a 95 Monte Carlo with the OBD 1.5 system. I was curious is this could be converted fairly easily to OBD 1 or OBD 2 so that it is easier to diagnose and read with available scan tools.

I am the mechanical type, and don't like taking my car's to the garages to get work done on them. I would rather be the one turning the wrench, however, this becomes difficult on a EFI engine with a ECM that is OBD 1.5

I understand that I could probably probe every sensor with a multimeter, and determine which sensor is shot, but that can be a pain.

Also, if I later want to add a power module to the ECM I don't think there is any available for the OBD 1.5 system.

Your insight, and knowledge is greatly appreciated.

With our cars we don't call it the "ECM" we call it the "PCM" (I know that it's not really a big deal, I just wanted to inform you of that). Otherwise, in order to convert your car from OBD 1.5 to OBD 1 or II, you will have to swap the wiring as well as the PCM. Not easy, but people have done it before. If you're going to do the swap, go to the OBD-II. OBD-1 is limited in it's diagnosing.

Hey,

Thanks for the reply!

So the wiring harness has to be switched out. Will a different wiring harness just plug straight in to all the sensors or will there be modifications?

Is it possible to just cut the connectors off that connect to the PCM, and wire on the connectors from an OBD-II system?

Is there a PCM that you recommend? And will it need to be flashed?

Also, I am a computer programmer that works with Java so I am very comftorable with electronics and computer systems. So is it possible to make a cable that connects to my computer that will read the OBD "1.5" or is there one available somewhere?

Again, here I go with all these questions, but again I thank you for your responses.
