so you never found out the starter problem? its been bugging me since you post it. so it was the wrong tooth count? i thought that you guys rebuilt the motor why are you doing seals and gaskets now that its in the car? the only tip i have is i believe they sell a 2 piece timing cover so that you can change the cam without having to drop the pan if i were to do it again i would invest oil pans a pain once the motors in the car and since your pulling the pan it would make life easier for future cam swaps. other then that good luck.

We did rebuild the motor. Then it sat for a few years while the project got put on hold. A few of the gaskets and seals dry rotted and are no longer sealing.
Really it is a pain in the ***. But oh well. Well be pulling the motor and checking everything else.
I'm spoiled from working on my jeep. It's been much easier
