Default 86' 305 stock engine stuttering :update:

Hey guys.. new to this forum. Ive got an 86 monte ss w/305 engine/350 tranny. I took out the electronic advance repaced it with a vacume advance distibuter, emissions off ( smog pump, ect). My problem is at takeoff (from a dead stop at a stoplight) the engine will sputter for a quick second then return to normal acceleration. Also when I get the RPM's high in park or shifting at about 4.5rpm I get a puff of smoke at the shift point. No oil in the raidiator, or vice versa. No gas in the oil also. Thanks for any help I can get....

the puff of smoke at high rpm is prolly weak valve springs. at high rpm they are getting lazy and not maintaining proper closing of the valves thus pulling in some oil. the sputter could be atiming issue. Do you know what the total timing on the motor is? Does it have a holley on it? has it backfired recently? If so, then replace the power valve. good luck!

its 6' off tdc and while in drive 600 Rpms but, when it hangs at exactly 600 the car will jump. 700 R's seem to hold the engine steady. Would switching the distibuter to vacume advance cause any of these problems? There is no holly on it .. stock intake and stock rochester carb.

for me the rpm is too low. that could be the stutter. i prefer no less than 850-900 rpm in gear which hopefully nets you bout 1000-1100 in park.Try idling it up to this area and see what it does. Is your total timing around 34 degrees?I would think the distributor is the problem over anything else.

i could be your carb not working properly because you took off the dis. the ecu no longer controls the timming or the carb and i have heard of some guys having problems with that in the past.
do you have a friend that has a holley or edelbrock or even a older q jet just to try to see if it would help ?

I took a couple of notes while driving today and noticed no matter where i put the timing or the idle the stuttering still occours... It doesnt do it EVERY time but more times than not.. The sound almost sounds like when you take a corner to fast in a carb. car and it kind of stutters... This will happen at take off or at any RPM in drive or in park when I take my foot completly off the pedal and press down. The stutter happens also when lightly touching the pedal at any crusing speed.. Any help or mindless guessing would be great.. If it is the distributer and carb match ill just have to switch back to elect. advance till a new carb/intake [&o]

well i just got fed up with all the problems and got myself a 79' 350 intake and carb. took off all the wiring crap(all of it but the temp sensor-oil pressure sensor and the alternator) did a valve adjustment used a rebuild distributer (vacuume advance).. that took care of the problems LOL.
