A quick check for a bad choke would be, Take the air cleaner off stick a long screwdriver in the top of the carb to open the butterfly plate (thats the choke) stay away from the top of the carb it could backfire and singe all the hair on your head, have someone start the car and try to keep it running try to do this on a warm day where the choke would open quickly if the car runs OK like this you have a bad choke. But it sounds like a fuel filter to me
