80 Monte engine problem
Hi all,
I just bought an 80 Monte that starts and runs when you're stepping on the gas but the engine stops as soon as you release the gas pedal. Does anyone know what the problem is? any advice or comment is appreciated. Thanks!

Well it sounds like you are not getting enough fuel at idle. You obviously can get fuel with the gas pedal down so that seems to be fine but would need to have the carb adjusted.
I don't have much experiance on carbs other that I believe there are 3 adjustment screws, 1 of which should be for adjusting the idle and that might be need to be turned in to deliver more fuel.
Can anyone else explain what the other 2 screws are for?

Depends on the carb. You might have or seven, depending on your setup. But you should have a Fuel mixture screw (rich or lean), and idle adjustment screw. At the very least... You might have adjustable floats depending on your fuel pressure.
It depends on which engine you had. If you had the LG3, you probably have a rochester dualjet 2 barrel. It sounds to be as if your car is flooding out when you release the throttle. Could be two things.
I heard that there is a plug in the bottom of the fuel bowl that is notorious for leaking in Qjets and drains gas into the intake manifold. But this is just hearsay.
Another possibility is the choke might be messed up. Might be a loss of vacuum.. Anyhow.. Hopefully this will help more:

is it possible that the engine is just cold? The car only gets started 4-5 times a month before I bought it. The guy told me that there was nothing wrong with it. It's just cold [sm=oopssign.gif]. But it sounds like a pain in the *** to keep stepping on the gas when parked and hope the engine is warm enough that it won't stop at idle when you release the pedal
If it does it ONLY when cold, then maybe the choke isn't adjusted properly, or not working at all. Does it even have a choke? You mentioned it might have problems.

If the car does this only when cold then it is a choke issue.
Not sure where you're located but a shop near me did the re-build on the Q-jet carb in my '86 LS Monte for me. I bought the parts (carb kit, new choke pull off, gas filter) took this stuff and the carb to them and they did the re-build for $85.
After I got the carb back and put it back on the car they charged $30 to adjust the carb to the engine for me. They also checked a few other times while the car was in their shop including the engine timing.

Thanks for the advices and suggestion. What is a choke and where is that located? How much is a choke and isit a big problem? I know nothing about cars so don't get mad of my newbie question. I'm still learning but I really appreciate it when you guys help me.
forgot to add. What kind of choke do I need for the car?
