3800 Swap
I was looking around the internet the other day and found some sites that had refurbished 3800 engines for sale. They were selling for about $1500-$1600. If I swapped to the 3800 what all would I have to do besides new headers, new PCM, and new engine mounts. I have a friend who has engine hoist and mount and all the tools so it is possible I might be able to do the swap by myself (with some help of course). Would this be worth it??
Hi Dale,
You have a beautiful Monte Carlo & I understand wanting more power, but I don't know if it would be worth your money & time. You also have to consider suspension upgrades/brakes/trans/tires/rims/cooling system/etcand in the end, you have a used Monte that doesn't have the correct engine. (if U decide to sell it in your future)With the price of gas going up,I would suggest that you consider selling your Monte Carlo, because I'm sure someone would want it, especially with a smaller engine that gives better MPG.Or find a clean Monte Carlo with a 3.8 or Supercharged one and attempt to trade and compare the price of modificationsvs.a trade with everything you want.I've helped a lot of friends with engine changes &we were novice mechanic's and we always ran intomany problems.Maybe there's a MCF members that has done this & can give you some idea's & estimated cost.Your Time, your Money, your life, your decision.Wish you a wise choice.Good Luck, but I'm happy that you are doing yourhomework, before you jump into it.I think you already have a super look'in Monte : )`Space Out
well space, my thing is that i absolutely love my monte. I plan on keeping it for a long time. I wouldnt be doing the swap soon, probably in a year to year and a half when my engine has around 80,000 on it or so. But you are right, the SS do have a lot of different things. Maybe it would be worth looking into a silver SS???
what is it with us and our desire to do hard stuff to our cars? lol you with the 3.8 swap and me diggin deep and gonna try and drop a northstar 32v v8 in my 97. are we gluttons for punishment? i say no i say we live by the mc motto
