I thought the L36 came with the 4t60e transmission. Was that what they put in the 5th gens only?

After 2000 (possibly even before), the L36 got the 4t65e, and the LA1 got the 4t60e.
I could be wrong, but I think that the 3500 engines get the 4t65e now too?

There isn't really anything that is common to have fail.

As far as cheap parts repair, I would probably suggest spending the money to get a new supercharger coupler, and a couple bottles of GM supercharger oil (should be under $40 for all of it). Its not really a necessity- but if you get a supercharger from someone who just drove it and never changed the oil (not really a terrible thing in a s/c), then the stock coupler is probably worn, and the stock oil is probably nasty.

edit- rethinking this post, maybe you mean sensors that you must change over for the swap- in that case, the only one I can think of is the MAP sensor (stock L36 is a 1 bar, stock L67 is a 2 bar). You'll obviously change all the sensors in the TB too (MAF, TP, IAT) because you have to use the new tb anyways- and they usually come with all the sensors still in them because they use those tamper resistant torx bolts to hold them in.

The only L36 that I can think of w/ a 4t60 was a 97 gtp (hence one of the reasons I reccomend to avoid them). As far as I know, all the 98+ L36 montes, and GP's are 4t65's.

bumpin96monte, I read over your wall o text post again. So basically i can get any 00-03 SS monte carlo and just top swap it all and virtually have a L67? Are the body styles any different from 00-03 ones and the 04-05 ones?

Last year, during the big gas scare, supercharged w-body's were going for cheap around here. I think they still are. My buddy picked up a 98 GTP (safetied & etested) for $2000 Cdn. I grabbed a '97 Regal GS for $1800. You may call it grandpa's car, but I say that thing is bad *** and incredible bang for buck

Wow... Sounds like a dream man lol. When i do my searching online, here in Calgary i find most SS N/A for roughly 7-8 grand. S/C's they are trying for like 11+... lol.

If you're talking about '04-05 Monte SS N/A's for $7-8k and Monte SS s/c for $11k+, then realize that you're looking at cars that are 7-8 years newer than the '97-98 GP's and Regals. Mileage is a big factor also.

I bought a 2004 supercharged Monte in late November with 30k miles, and the blue book value when I looked it up was something like $13,700. I don't imagine it's much less than that now. *I just looked it up, and the blue book value is listed at 13,940 retail. That's at 30k miles though. It's actually at 35k by now.

Any series 2 3800 can be converted to an 'L67' by means of a top swap. The series 2 3800s started in ~1996 in some vehicles, so it really just depends what body style you like. You could get anything from a grand prix, to an impala, to various buicks- it just depends what you like.

As for montes, there are 2 different body styles that you're talking about:

-95-99 was the 5th gen, it was more rounded and had the lumina cousin- if you want to get a stock 3800 in one of these, you need a 98 or 99 z34

-00+ (to whenever the partial redesign came out 06?) is a 6th gen, all of which are the same body style.

The reason you see the 04-05 brought up so much, even though it is the same body style as the 00+, is because 04 was the first year you could get a factory SS L67. From 00-03, the SS only came with the L36.
