350 SB or 454 BB?
We are leaning towards the 350 SB at the moment because if cost of rebuilding the 350 and just adding a mild cam to get horsepower up around 350 which will be plenty for the wife. The Monte at the moment has a 700R4 tranny and a 3.73 posi rear end. My question for all of you is what would you recommend for either motor and if I go with the 350 what cam and other things would you do to get HP to around 350?

I would go with the 350 as you mentioned...More parts are available .
Is your 350 in good condition ? If so, maybe a mild cam/a good 4 barrel carb & headers should get you 350 HP or close to it..
If you have to rebuild your 350, I would just do a 30 over bore with good set of rings & a good valve `job (?)...It all comes down to time & $'s 4-Sure...Keep us updated & check back to see what our expert engine builders suggest...Good Luck & we look forward to your future posts

Heres my take on the whole Idea of getting 350 out of a 350...
A good Cam shaft is always something to improve torque, HP, performance...
That also depends on if you choose to go hydraulic or solid roller cam?
With either choice... Theres an added 3rd option that not everyone considers,
Instead of the stock tappet rockers... You may wanna also consider some roller rockers! (Far more efficient).... Then the question remains 2 or 4bbl carb? Heres something economical and powerful that will throw you and your friends for a loop! Try a Holley 500 2bbl ! It has great adjustability
Jetting becomes a non issue along with interchangeable power valves!
So, with that being said... It makes it very adjustable for street or strip use...Its really up to you!!! I have run a 500 holley 2bbl that performs like a 650 dbl pumper! Its all really what you want to accomplish with it! Mild or wild.... It will improve power through out the whole power band...
Just something to consider in your quest for getting 350 ponys out of your 350!

350 hp won't be a problem. Chevy has had 1 hp per cubic inch available all the way back to the mid-50s.
As was mentioned before, a good cam will go a long way. You also need to consider the heads. Think of the engine as a big air pump. It needs to breathe well an move air efficiently in order to generate the power.
For the carb, I would probably run a Q-jet if you are planning to use the car as regular transportation and need to have it be somewhat efficient. You can make great top end power with a Q-jet because the secondaries are so big. I know several people running in the 10s with Q-jet carbs. You just need to take your time in getting it set up properly.

Here's a suggestion for a set of heads...
That really puts out!
Chevrolet made a set called camel humps..(used mainly in corvettes) that have 194/202 valves !
Talk about pumping air! They are nicely ported and breathe very well from the factory.. Which also gave a 350/375hp!
