3.8 to 5.3 on a 6th gen HELP!!
ok. i need some help. i love my monte. its a 2000 with a 3.8 v6 in it. i put a lot of appearance mods to this car and put some money into it. so i dont want to sell it to buy another monte with a 5.3, so i was wondering how can i put a 5.3 in the monte carlo i already have, i found a motor out of an 07 and i need help on how it will work or if it will work at all.
thanks!
thanks!
If I were you, I would buy a totalled 06 or 07 Monte SS or Impala SS and just take parts off of it as you needed for the swap. It will be a challenging swap though. A different route that you could go with your Monte would be to either do a top swap on your 3800 or do an L67 swap. Both are much easier and much cheaper and there are a LOT of people who have done it and can help you with the swap.
It was done on an Impala, but we are talking about a LOT of work, not just dropping in the motor. He had to drop in all the electronics, redid the whole dash, etc. etc.
I would find you the thread about his car, but the search feature isn't working on NAIOA because they are having hosting problems right now.
I agree on the L67 swap, much cheaper, much easier, and can easily go faster.
Or even just turbo'ing your car. ZZP makes a Z3 turbo that is super easy to install and not a bad price.

The bottom end of your motor should take the abuse no problem. I have a modified engine and I'm going to hit 175,000 miles this week. Dropping in a new used motor isn't always the best solution.
You could also find a lower mileage top end of the L67 engine and put it on your bottom end and create a "top-swapped" motor, which has higher compression and can run boost more efficiently. And while building the top-end on your engine, you can replace every gasket and o-rings, etc.
Look into those options, they are going to be much easier and there are PLENTY of people who have done it.
ZZPerformance.com can also help you greatly, just look under Grand Prix since it's the same motor (grand prix 98-03)

It's not just the supercharger, it's the whole top half of the engine.
Check this link for what it entails:

I would also like to note that the list that Chibi is very complete and is a great reference. If you want to get most of those parts cheaper, you can check out a local junkyard or search the classified sections of most 3800 oriented forums. There's usually a top swap around somewhere for cheap.
And for the record, my Monte had around 145,000 when I installed my CSC and I'm currently over 160k miles now. 3800's hold up very well. There's a guy on clubgp who's 3800 made 385whp and the bottom end finally went out at over 260k miles. If you've taken care of your engine, it should be fine.

Better yet, could you start a thread on here about your build? I would love to see what all was involved and I'm sure many others would too.
