3.5L v6 and the 3800 compatiblity
I am buying my friends monte and im not enterly sure what modle it is but it has the 3.5L v6 and was looking into upgrades for it. I came across a forum post and a guy on their said "Hey i have a 00 montecarlo ls 3.4 in reply to your questions there is alot u can do with it my car last Dyno'd at 457HP to acheve this yor gonna halv to get your hands dirty High comprression pistons cam lifters injectors. BUT you can get some serious hp wiuth the stock motor youcan use the 3.8 intake there is no diffrent the 3.4 and the 3.8 ar the same diffrent boar and stroke but other then that it's the same. u can bolt on a supercharger but go wiuth a BIGGER pulley insted of the smaller one anything for the 3.8 can go to the 3.4 like i said its the same damn thing hope this helps you man good luck" 00MonteCarlo
I was wondering if the 3.5L is based off of the 3.4L and if so then will the same be true about the 3800 parts fitting.

No, you can't use parts from the 3.8 on your 3.5.
There aren't many modifications for the 3.5L that you can buy, anything you try will be mostly experimental and custom.
What are your goals for the car?

As Chibi said, the 3800 and 3500 are NOT compatible.
The 3500 is based off the older 3400 block, but the 3500 is a different engine.
As for modding the 3500 for more power, you are not going to get 450+ HP from a 3500 with out some serious CUSTOM modification.
If you are just looking for some additional power/ pep...I would recommend an Overkill PCM, and a Cold Air Induction with exhaust. You will notice an improvement in power with these mods, pushing your HP from the 211 stock crank HP, to possibly about 230 crank HP. (that's just a guess). But like I said, anything much more than that, you are looking at serious custom mods and lots of money.

Here are the differences between the 3500 and the 3800 and what is not compatible with each other:
Everything
Whoever told you that they were compatible with each other is VERY wrong.
3500 basics:
60* v6
Aluminum heads (good flowing heads at that)
Aluminum intake manifolds (upper and lower)
Pushrod engine
3800 basics:
90* v6
cast iron heads (heavy and poor flowing)
Aluminum lower intake manifold, plastic upper (aluminum upper on f-body's and L26's)
Pushrod engine
If you want to modify your 3500, I would advise going turbo and/or checking out Wot-Tech's website.

I used to recommend the coldairinductions.com kit for the 3.5L (by using the 3.9L version), but then Bill from CAI mentioned that they don't recommend it because they don't have a solution for the MAF sensor.

My CAI for Coldairinductions.com works awesome.
What exactly are you referring to about the MAF Sensor Mike? With my CAI, I don't see what solution you need for the MAF, in fact the entire MAF unit/ housing is still part of the stock set up.
