Default 3.4 DOHC Oil Pump Drive Leak

Had the typical oil leak from the oil pump drive shaft. Took the air cleaner assembly and exhaust crossover pipe off as well as the drive hold down. Lifted the drive up and slipped an o-ring in between it and the block. Tightened the hold down and put everything back together with no leaks. Much, much easier than removing the intake and/or the head to silicone orreplace the internal o-ring.

wow, i dont hear about too many monte's having oil leaks, thats the first for me anyway...i've heard of intake manifolds going and the oil leaking into the antifreeze, or the other way around, but never seen anyone have to change the seal on the oil pump shaft

bet ya that took a lot of time

Unfortunately with the 3.4 DOHC (and I believe the other 2.8L based engines), the oil pump drive leakage problem is QUITE common. Fixing it is not a big deal but access is something else.

yes it is a common issue with the DOHC. im sure many DOHC's ended their life on the road premeturely due to the owners giving up in dealing with this issue. GM calls for the rear head to be removed to properly fix it. that entails much more work then any push rod motor... consider removing and replaceing the Timing belt is part of pulling the rear head.... and GM charges 1200 for that. imagen the cost of the repair to replace a tiny rubber o ring!
