Default 2006 3.9 engine replacement

My 06 Monte finally kicked the bucket. Horrible raddle at startup.
Bought it new and love it still. 186k

Question is, is there any differences on 3.9. I know some of them had displacement on demand. But on the 06-07 monte and impala were they generally the same.
Anything to look out for that wont be compatible?

I'm planning on keeping it till ..forever.

Any feedback is appreciated.

I dont know squat about the 3900s, but are you sure it's not something simple - a cracked flexplate, balancer coming apart, etc? Or is defintiely an internal bottom end issue?

It sounds like something banging in there, it'll try to start then popping and other metal noises. A mechanic co-worker says its more like a piston wrist or something like that.

Ill tear it apart this week but doesn't sound very promising.

Doing an initial scan, Misfires are on Cylinder 1,3,5
What would cause one side of the engine to go dead with rattling noise??

So it cant be one component of the engine and also cant be 3 different components at the same time either?

Anyone have any idea for this?

Sadly I don't know much to anything about the 3900. I believe I have read the 3900 is the same basic block as the 3100/3400/3500 (not sure if that is true or not).
That is extremely strange to have all the misfires on the same side.... Just wild thinking (ignoring the rattle, focused on the misfires):
- Bad ICM
- Bad coil (I think that uses a single coil)
- Curious if the injectors on that side share say a common ground wire that is not shared with the other side and is broken somewhere in the path.

Wish you luck getting the Monte back on the road.
If you ever decide to part with the car, let me know what you want for those Moda wheels. I would not mind an extra set.
