Question 1985 4.3 V6 296 cid swap.

Hi, Does anyone know what is a good motor swap 350,302,383 for my 85 MC ? I am trying not to spend more than $2,000,and do I need to upgrade the tranny? If someone could recomend a good motor/ tranny swap combo that would be great. This will be my first car I build. I just wanna be able to smoke the wheels basically.

the stroker is definitely out of your price range, and the 302 is going to be impossible to find and wasnt known for being a torque monster anyway. you would need to really gear the car to take advantage of the 302. you could always try and pick up a tuned port 350/700r4 out of a wrecked iroc or a ta. i assume you have a 200 4r in the car so you could always just pick up a tuned port 350 and run the trans that you have now. i only recommend the tuned port cause it shouldnt be to hard to find and being fuel injected i think it would be a better choice. especially if your just lookin to do burnouts. or you could follow buds advice and get one from the truck and then pick up a ss rear. i wouldnt go from a 4 speed to a 3 speed. i ran a 350 trans in my car and it was awesome with a little bit of convertor and a shift kit but once the car was geared it was a nightmare to drive on the highway.
