reportedly cost 80% more than a similar GM 4T60 transmission and weighed 60 lb (27 kg) more.

They are somewhat similiar..Kinda

Im guessing thats why, because of costs..and size like you said

Dont know where you live but many local trans shops can do certain things to make those transmissions a bit tougher, like any other trans...
Got any more details on this monte? I saw your pics. Looking nice, is it complete yet?

Wow, that is a pretty big price difference. But you'd think that with how expensive the sticker was on the LS4 cars anyways that another grand or so would be worth it for fewer customer complaints. They had to have known that some people would mod the things (and that even the stock ones would get beat on), especially since it was designed to be the performance model.

I would bet it could be done for a good deal less unless you had to pay someone to do all the labor too. You can pick up used, rwd 3800 camaro's for under $1000 with banged up body parts- and use the bulk of that for the swap. The worst thing about it for the LS4 guys would be the FWD bellhousing pattern. Unless you had an adaptor made to use normal, rwd transmissions- you'd be pretty much stuck with the 4l60 or T5.

I found your pics finally, and I did have a couple questions:
-How much power is that C4 IRS supposed to be able to handle? (especially with the extra weight)
-What did you use for engine mounting up front, and why'd you mount the engine so far back like in a camaro?
-Any other pics of how the rear end bracing and such is set up?

- The 4T80 is reserved for the luxury models - Cadillac and Buick (although was also used in the Pontiac Bonneville). It was designed to match the Northstar V8.

- Good luck getting a manual in there. There is very little packaging room for anything, much less a manual. GM's 4-speed design is such that the gearsets and clutches wrap around the back of the engine and the only components in line with the crankshaft are the torque converter and chain sprocket. I would like to figure out a way to get a 6T70 in there, personally, but there's just not enough width in the W car engine compartment.

I don't really see why it matters much if it was originally designed for the luxury models- I realize power loss through it would be a good bit worse especially with that huge diff, but it just seems like it would've been a much better match to the torque and weight combination of a V8 wbody.
