When I was getting my SS, we had it custom ordered from the factory because an SS was standard with a sunroof, and I did not want one.

Never had good experiences in the winter time, with ice breaking the seals and causing leaks.

I was thinking about just going back to the Chevy dealership toinsure that it's done right and just bitting the bullet and paying the extra price for getting it done right

A sunroof on an '04 SS was an option. On the order sheet for mine, it was listed as a $900 extra option.
Most likely chevy installed them standard on the 6th gen SS for the first few years, and then made them an option at some point. They do this fairly often with different things in order to change the base prices or to keep the base prices the same but to increase profits.

Sometimes you'll notice little things that were standard on the earlier models but didn't come on the later models.
My '01 LS had a stock front strut tower brace, but my '04 s/c SS did not come with one.
When I was looking into getting a new car about a year ago, I noticed that after 2002, traction control and some other features did not come standard on the LS.

yeah when ordering my 2000 SS sunroof was STANDARD, so I had to work to get without. Basically everything was a standard option for my car, making the SS the best model.

Then the LTZ came out and got all the options while the SS's started to just get the power.

I still remember my sticker price... $24,449
