Snow, Ice and Salt Damage: I Hope Your Monte Looks Better

x2
A friend of mine bought a used 95 LS. Everything runs great but when I checked the underside it was a mess. I never new about rust/salt and what it does to cars but this was bad. It was eating the steel. I telling him to sell it or get some of the parts repaired cause it looked dangerous.

I'm also fortunate to not really have much in the way of rust on my Monte. The exhaust system is rusting, but that's about it. The bad thing about living in the South, though, is that I have to run the freaking A/C in January..
Isn't the stuff that's rubberized that black goop that is on the bottom of older cars? My '82 Olds had that, and it seemed to preserve the underside of the car over the decades..

Mine has been through about 7 Michigan winters and it isn't that bad looking underneath. If you want them to look new you'll probably have to replace them. You could try a rust converter and then paint them.

Here are pictures of the passenger side strut/shock tower and driver side control arm. I started out using flat Black but ended up using Semi-Gloss because it was handy.
1. Before wire brushing 2. After primer applied 3.Final Result 4.Control Arm Before 5. Control Arm After

Never Satisfied
I was finished scraping, rust proofing and painting. I was remounting the wheel but that ugly Black caliper was staring at me. Why not? I have the paint. I really like Red. OK, now I'm finished. (for today)
