Default Towing a trailer w/a Monte Carlo SS?

Hey Guys,

My son has an 03 Monte Carlo SS. He's going to be moving to Colorado after Christmas. He was thinking about renting a u-haul trailer to pull behind his car.
I found the towing capacity is only 1000 lbs. My question, has anyone done this with their car? He will driving about 1400 miles. Any help or recomendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Brian

We are not a towing car, I cringed just thinking about this... I mean you can but.... eh... if he does tow he can't have it in D it will have to be in 3 which will generate excess wear and tear on the trans but is better than towing in over drive. Maybe get a smaller uhaul and tow the car behind that on the trailer they have for it.

I don't think its a good idea to tow with anything uni-body, although they obviously make hitches for them. Maybe pulling something like a jetski or anything small/compact/light.

Yeah, I should of clairified that he only wants to tow a small u-haul trailer with things like clothes, bike, a bed and a few misc. items.

Its possible but still a scary thought. A lot of wear and tear on the car.

I highly Recommend he rents a U haul truck and tow the Monte behind it on a trailer. I believe In some states its illegal to tow with a front wheeldrive vehicle.. Let alone a Monte Carlo.

The Mrs and I tow a 30 ft. 5th wheel camper all over the country during the summer Months... I can honestly say I have "Never" seen anyone tow anything with a front wheel drive Monte Carlo.... However, I have seen some idiots pull a small popup camper in a front wheel drive van.

These transmissions in the Monte Carlos is the "weak" link on these vehicles. IMO I would say... "Don't Do It"!

Well, actually a former cousin-in-law of mine used to tow a pretty decent size speed boat with a 4Cyl '98 Avenger. He had the thing lowered with a body kit and all Fast n' Furious - but which a hitch on the back. The thing looked ridiculous, especial when towing. He abused the crap out of that Avenger. Its not like it was reliable - he wasn't constantly throwing money at it, but it towed that boat. At least that Avenger was a stick shift tho...

Thanks for all the helpful info! I'll take that into consideration when I make a decision on what he should do. He would like to find someone that might be interested in trading for an S-10 or something similar. Have to think about this one.....

Thanks again!
