Default Trailing Arm Breaking a Common Problem?

So my Monte just broke a trailing arm the other day (normal driving). Scared the hell outta me when the back end started kicking out. She has 158k miles on her now so I would think this type of part woulda lasted the life time of the vehicle. Is this a common problem or a freak occurrence?

Ill post pics when my phone decides to send them to my email....

Never heard of that happening myself. But I'm not too surprised, it is folded sheet after all. Now is the perfect time to invest in a replacement that you probably won't be able to break.

BMR Fab Trailing Arms $130 for the pair.

x2 never see it break in half like that. i seen it bent. what year is your monte btw? the 97-03 grand prix use the same trailing arm like that and i know they have problem with it bending. the 04 plus monte carlo ss and impala use the round trailing arm like the gmpp. if this is your DD i would find a set off the monte/impala.

It is my DD, so I had to replace it fast with a Autozone replacement. Seems to be of the same quality as the OEM so if it can last another 150k miles I can live with it haha... I dont understand how it could break either, its weird.

Living in central Mass, the salt probably got to it.

BTW, the GMPP part 12498649 for the trailing arms has been discontinued and superseded with a new part number when you order them. The catalog still has the old p/n.

Do you remember what that new p/n is?

I went into the dealership today quickly before class to order this set of trailing arms. The parts dept. guy said that it was discontinued, and no replacement part number was given. I did some googling two days ago and found a reference to a new part number 15856683 on the regalgs forum. Look at the post second from the bottom here: http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:...ient=firefox-a The parts guy said that number pointed to a different number: 25990164.

When he showed me the screen there were three parts listed. They were the FE1/FE2/FE3 trailing arms, the FE4 trailing arms, and this new part number. They all referenced the same part in the diagram of the rear suspension.

Anyway I still have a question after all of my research -- does anyone know what the difference is between the FE3 and the FE4 trailing arms listed above? I'm thinking maybe the FE4 t/a are what are in the GMPP kit?

Edit: I forgot to add that I drive a 2005 Monte Carlo LT with the FE3 suspension. I've ordered the GMPP stb's and the rear sway bar a few days ago. I started to read more about the t/a's and decided I wanted them.

The regalgs guys said the new arms were apparently made differently ie square bar instead of round tube -- which I guess could account for the price. I still couldn't believe the price but I ended up ordering them. The parts guy figures they'll be in tomorrow afternoon.

P/N: 12498649 Price quoted: 80.80 for a set of two
P/N: 25990164 Price quoted: 79.25 for one!

Its weird how screwed up the whole situation is for these trailing arms.

Just so anyone else interested in the GMPP trailing arms doesn't have to go through all of this the new part number is:

P/N List $ Net $ Qty
25990164 87.18CAD 79.25CAD 1 arm

These new arms are definitely made out of solid square bar. Only thing is they're made in China whereas the other GMPP stuff I ordered was all made in Canada. This doesn't make any sense since you need two buy two of these kits since only 1 arm is included for that price.

just FYI, I put the number into GMPArtsdirect, and it was $66 shipped for 2 arms. Unfortunately for you Rooster, they don;t ship to Canada
