Default Tire recommendations.

The Dale Jr car I just bought needs some new tires. It has 235/55/17's on it. Some of you have given me some ideas but I need some more. So, those of you who have a Monte with the same suspension setup, can you tell me which brand and model of the tire you are happy with in terms of ride and longevity? I don't really want any real high price tires if I can help it but I also don't want the cheapest out there. Thanks for any help.

Goodyear GTs are a good tire for all-season.

You'll hear everyone say to stay away from the stock Goodyear RSA

So far I'm very happy with my Yokohama AVID TRZ's. I just got them last Saturday and it's been all kinds of ****ty outside. They've done well.

Look at Tirerack.com

The General Altimax HP have great reviews, and are a great price too. (plus look cool too )

I am running Continental Conti-Pro Contacts right now, and so far i'm very happy with them.

On the more expensive side of things, the Michelin Hydroedge is an excellent tire, just kinda steep on the price side of things.

I put on a set of Goodyear F1 all seasons this past season, but in 245/45-18, out the door for $485. We have the exact same tire on our Solstice, and it's a GREAT tire. Unfortunately, that tire was made specifically for the Solstice GXP/ Sky Redline, and no longer appears available. It is available in the 235/55-17, but at a base price of $157 ea.

Before the F1s, I had BFGoodrich G-Force KDWS, and they were OK, but not as good as the F1s.

There's the Kuhmo Ecsta ASX for $107, and it seems to have a good rating:

Or the Dunlop SP Sport Signature at $120.

Before I put on these Goodyear Ultra Grips, I had a set of these Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires, but the're SALTY at $200, and I didn't get any life out of them. I can't recommend them.

I look for a minimum rating of 420 AA A. More is better, but usually more is more $$$.
I recommend the 1st set, the Goodyear F1s.
Hope this helps.

Thanks guys for the input. I should have said upfront that I don't like Goodyear and probably won't consider them. The last two new vehicles I've had, both had Goodyears from the factory and both only got about 25,000 miles before they were no good. The 98 Grand Prix GT we had, had the Goodyear Eagle GT on it from the factory and they did not last at all. My truck came with the Goodyear Wrangler and they were crap tires. Here are the tires that the local tire places have quoted me prices for:

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S $879 for four.
Cooper Tour CS4 $563
Hankook Optimo H418 $550
Firestone FR710 $602
Toyo Versado LX $787
Nexen N5000 $516
BF Goodrich T/A Advantage $560
Yokohoma A/S 530 $729
Sumotomo Touring $606

My other question is how important is it to keep the factory speed rating on the new tires. Most of the above tires are H rated tires. Did most of you go with lower speed ratings than the factory recommedation?

None of the above places seem to want to deal with Tirerack tires, even the suggested installation places. I'm sure its because they want me to buy theirs. They tried to tell me that Tirerack tires are seconds and not as good.

I need to get some tires on soon. I'm just having a hard time deciding on what to get. Thanks.

The reason you dis-like the Goodyeqar tires is cuz they are FACTOY tires, like the RS-A's on the 6th gen SS's, A real POS tire! Cheapest bidder.
The F1s are MUCH better.

And Tire Rack wouldn't have gotten to be as big as they are if they dealt in junk.

An "H" speed rating is 130 mph. Are you going to drive that fast? "Z" is 149.

Hankook Optimo H418 does not come in the correct size. They are trying to sell you an SUV tire maybe? The correct tire is the H417 with a 380 A A rating. You won't be happy with the tread life.

The Firestone has good tread life, but poor traction at 560 A B.

Toyo Versado LX is a 60,000 mile tire rated at 400 AA A. You might be happy with these, but there are better.

Nexen N5000 is a 420 A A.

BF Goodrich Advantage TA at a 560A A rating isn't bad. Expect tire noise.

Yokohoma A/S 530 at 28# is heavy, but with a 500 AA A rating, looks like a heck of a good tire! Your gas mileage might drop about 1 mpg.

Sumotomo Touring must be the Sumotomo Touring T. with an H rating.

Bridgestone Turanza Serenity at a 740 A A is one of THE highest UTQG rated tires out there. (Firestone is a bottom end Bridgestone, and Michelin owns them both).

And the new Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max at only 24# has an excellent 580 A A rating.

Get the BF Goodrichs

Thanks for the reply and the links. I noticed in the link for the Goodyear F1, the first three reviews were not very positive at all. You must be having better luck with them. Most everyone that I talk to also does not like Goodyears, even a lot of the people that sell the. What do you think about the Cooper touring CS4? It seems to have a good rating.

I don't plan on driving very fast so I don't need high speed rated tires.
