rotors
see i dont understand people saying they get them coated, with a magnesium coat or something like that. the first time you hit the brakes all that will be gone
Actually it is the hubs that are magnesium coated. You are correct, if it was on the rotor it would be gone almost immediately. I don't drive my car daily, and it is common for the rotors to have slight surface rust on them which goes away as soon as I hit the brakes. After 2 years there is no rust on the hubs whatsoever.
A while back there was some discussion here about installing GM Z-28 dual piston calipers on a MC. Has anyone actually done this? If so,any comments about degree of difficulty, braking improvements, etc?

I think they are coated with zinc. I put a set of drilled and slotted on the front on my Firebird drove it for maybe 1000 miles, it has been parked for the past year doing a motor swap among other things and my rotors don't have any rust on the braking surface. Of course it has been in the garage all that time. The whole rotor was zinc plated. I haven't talked to anyone else just my experience. GM rotors are complete junk. I have seen them with less than 5K and corroded so bad they were flaking apart and depending of how and where you drive warp easily.
Now that you mention it, it is zinc coated, not magnesium.Probably much cheaper to do. I'm sure the whole rotor was coated just for the ease of manufacturing, but it shouldn't take long for the coating to come off the rotor braking surface. My car has sat for a month or more without being driven, but had no more than minor surface rust on the rotors. Probably could have rubbed it off with your hand if you wanted. As far as quality, I'm pretty happy. I have around 40,000 miles on the brakes and rotors and not alot of wear showing on the rotors, but I'm going to change the pads soon. And I drive the car fairly hard at times, so that milage is pretty good.
